Bill Dellinger

Bill Dellinger’s involvement with running spans more than 50 years. His achievements as a runner rival those as a coach. The three-time Olympian (1956, 1960, 1964) capped his running career by winning the bronze medal in the 5,000m in 1964. He won the NCAA mile in 1954, was the 2-mile champion in 1955 and he became the 5,000m champion in 1956. He has held American records for 1,500m, 3,000m, 5,000m, and two miles, and he held the indoor world records for the 2- and 3-mile races. Dellinger has coached numerous world-class runners, including Alberto Salazar, Matt Centrowitz, Steve Prefontaine, Rudy Chapa, and Bill McChesney. Head coach at the University of Oregon from 1973 to 1998, Dellinger’s teams captured the NCAA cross country title four times and the track and eld championship in 1984. He is the author of The Running Experience and Winning Running. Dellinger lives in Eugene, Oregon.
