Mike Gipson

Entering his 13th season at Cal in 2019-20 and seventh as Associate Director, Mike Gipson oversees the Golden Bears in the sprints, hurdles and relays in addition to his work as the program’s recruiting coordinator.

Among Gipson’s pupils have been Kimyon Broom, the school-record-holder in the 100-meter hurdles and 60-meter hurdles and a two-time Pac-10 champion. He also coached the women’s 4x100 relay to four of the top six times in school history the last two years, including an eighth-place finish at the 2008 NCAA meet and a berth in the 2010 NCAA championships.

Gipson came to Cal after spending eight years at Sacramento State, where he coached the Hornets’ sprints, hurdles, relays and horizontal jumps, while also serving as recruiting coordinator. More than 30 of the athletes/relays Gipson has coached still stand in the school’s all-time top five marks. He also had over 50 All-Big Sky Conference selections.

In his coaching career, Gipson has coached champions and nationally-ranked athletes at the youth/age-group, high school, collegiate, U.S .national, foreign national, masters and senior levels.
