Ron Warhurst

Ron Warhurst is the head cross country and men’s track and field coach at the University of Michigan, positions he has held since 1974 and 2000, respectively. Prior to 2000, he served as an assistant coach with the men’s track and field program for 25 seasons. In his exceptional coaching career at Michigan, Warhurst has developed 66 track and field and 36 cross country All-American performers. Among the Wolverine greats with whom he has worked are runners John Scherer, Kevin Sullivan, Brian Diemer, and 1983 Boston Marathon champion Greg Meyer. Considered as one of the top cross country coaches in the nation, Warhurst has guided seven of his Michigan teams to Big Ten cross country titles. For his efforts, he has been named Big Ten Cross Country Coach of the Year four times. A 1966 graduate of Western Michigan University, where he starred on two NCAA cross country championship teams, Warhurst began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Eastern Michigan University. From 1968-’70, Warhurst served in the United States Marine Corps, earning two Purple Hearts following service in Vietnam.
